How to merge Eastern sounds and Western music? Pianist Rembrandt Frerichs has been experimenting with this concept for years. His trio’s performances regularly feature guest players on ancient traditional instruments. On these occasions, Rembrandt uses a specially built fortepiano, a replica of the instrument from Mozart’s day, with its ‘unique, poetic sound’. For the listener, the fortepiano brings a sound reminiscent of performances of historic music, but Rembrandt plays it in the most contemporary sense. The Rembrandt Frerichs Trio features Rembrandt Frerichs on fortepiano, Tony Overwater on violone (a predecessor of the double bass) and Vinsent Planjer on ‘whisper kit’, an experimental drum kit of his own invention.
