Unheard of is a musical evening curated by Rembrandt Frerichs and introduces its audience to a wide range of talents. The Belgian cellist, composer and conductor Benjamin Glorieux is known for his awe-inspiring creativity and penchant for diversity. Multiple award-winning saxophonist Ties Mellema is a solo artist as well as working with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Like Glorieux he is always searching for new crossovers between jazz, pop and classical, theatre and dance. Unheard of also features special guest: Hossein Alizadeh, Iranian master musician and virtuoso. Alizadeh plays târ and shurangiz, and is one of the leading contemporary experts and interpreters of Persian music.
Curator and pianist Rembrandt Frerichs plays the 18th century fortepiano. Accompanying him is Tony Overwater on violone, a predecessor of the double bass, and Vinsent Planjer on ‘whisper kit’, a drumkit of his own invention. Using these historic instruments the trio will perform new, contemporary pieces. A mixture of revolutionary sounds, especially in jazz, which will set the tone for a new tradition rooted in classical music, baroque, jazz and classical Middle-Eastern repertoire.
Rembrandt Frerichs: “I believe music evolves along with the development of individual musicians. That’s why as a musician I am always looking for the chance to experience music with the audience in a way that reflects our time. During my curatorship at Crossing Border I’ve planned a series of genre-breaking performances, letting the audience identify with musicians outside of their classical context, collaborating in the areas of jazz and improvisation.”
