Oyinkan Braithwaite has wanted to become a writer her whole life. When she was eight years old, she dreamed that she would have long hair by her twenty-first birthday, she would be a famous writer and would be married to a Mr Rochester type. She studied law and creative writing, worked for online magazines, the Nigerian publishing house Kachifo and got people’s attention as a poetry slammer. Writing meant dealing with fears and insecurities: Is my story Nigerian enough? Is my work literary enough, are my words profound enough? Braithwaite is determined to develop her talent. In 2016 she was on the shortlist for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. My sister, the serial killer is a dark, sharp and funny novel about the Nigerian Korede, who discovers her sister has a habit of killing her boyfriends. The film rights have been sold.
