Saskia de Coster is the author of a quirky oeuvre. Her sixth novel Wij en ik (We and I) is a bulky family novel that takes place in an upper-class environment full of drama and family secrets. To promote this novel she started ‘Project 397’, where she read one page a day of the 397-page book on video. This project was a real eye-opener for her showing her that “you can also reach readers in other ways.” She designed the book cover herself and won the Opzij Literature Prize and was nominated for the AKO Literature Prize, Libris Literature Prize and the Golden Book Owl.
Her work is characterized by a strong style, surprising images, clever insights and penetrating stories. Saskia De Coster is also active as a video artist and collaborates with artists on various projects. She writes song lyrics and theatre plays and in 2009 she made a graphic novel. De Coster consciously plays with the spelling of her name, switching between Dutch form with small d and the Belgian official form with a capital D. “That’s a game that I play. Sometimes I write my name with a large D, next time with a small d. If you do that long enough, nobody will know what’s right anymore. “
